{"id":268,"date":"2015-11-11T15:49:23","date_gmt":"2015-11-11T23:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hub.wsu.edu\/law-justice-realtime\/?p=268"},"modified":"2015-11-11T15:49:23","modified_gmt":"2015-11-11T23:49:23","slug":"the-freedom-to-find-a-job-prisoner-re-entry-and-the-struggle-of-finding-a-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hub.wsu.edu\/law-justice-realtime\/2015\/11\/11\/the-freedom-to-find-a-job-prisoner-re-entry-and-the-struggle-of-finding-a-job\/","title":{"rendered":"The Freedom to Find a Job; Prisoner Re-entry and the Struggle of Finding a Job"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='640' height='390' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gJtYRxH5G2k?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;autohide=2&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Prisoner reform is one of the biggest topics being talked about right now by the media and congress. \u00a0Once released from prison the recidivism rate for offenders\u00a0is at a staggering high of 50%. \u00a0In NYC, 89% of offenders violate their prole who are unemployed. \u00a060% of offenders do not hold a job a year after release. \u00a0Along with that 40% of offenders do not have a GED or high school diploma. \u00a0So how do we stop the cycle of recidivism? \u00a0It seems like common sense but people with jobs do far less crime then people with jobs. \u00a0If we want to reduce recidivism offenders need to be able to find and hold a job. \u00a0A lot of offenders though find it hard to find and hold jobs after being released from prison because of discrimination or not having the right education. \u00a0The system we have right now sets up offenders to fail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/931\/2015\/11\/prison-systems.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-270\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/931\/2015\/11\/prison-systems-396x343.jpg\" alt=\"prison-systems\" width=\"396\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/931\/2015\/11\/prison-systems-396x343.jpg 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/931\/2015\/11\/prison-systems.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How does this apply to Privacy, Security, and Freedom of Speech though? \u00a0If we were to fix these problems and offenders found it easier to get jobs that means we will have more offenders in the work place. \u00a0This could make a lot of people nervous and some people might not feel safe. \u00a0Employers are hesitant to hire people with criminal records because they are worried about the safety of their workers and how good of a worker they are. \u00a0One of the harder barriers that offenders have to overcome is filling out a job application. \u00a0In almost all job application their is a section where you have too fill out if you have been convicted of a felony. \u00a0Most jobs will throw your application in the garbage if you fill out yes you have and wont even consider you for the position. \u00a0On top of all of this there is a lot of jobs that have restrictions on hiring people with criminal records. \u00a0For a small amount of jobs this is not a bad thing but for majority of jobs a reformed offender is just like any person. \u00a0This creates a question of how much privacy should offenders get regarding to their criminal record.<\/p>\n<p>Questions<\/p>\n<p>1: Would you feel safe if you worked with someone who was once in prison?<\/p>\n<p>2. Do you think that it should be legal to ask people if they have committed a felony on applications for jobs?<\/p>\n<p>3. Should we bar people from certain jobs with criminal records no matter what their crime is?<\/p>\n<p>4.
