{"id":4567,"date":"2016-07-29T17:00:42","date_gmt":"2016-07-30T00:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hub.wsu.edu\/ise\/?p=4567"},"modified":"2016-08-24T16:18:03","modified_gmt":"2016-08-24T23:18:03","slug":"haskel-gas-booster-pressure-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hub.wsu.edu\/ise\/2016\/07\/29\/haskel-gas-booster-pressure-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Haskel Gas Booster Pressure Test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of the two gas boosters (compressors) we have, we have successfully pressure tested one of them.\u00a0 The Haskel AGD-15 has been tested for stall pressure using nitrogen.\u00a0 This gas booster is a double acting, single state mechanism used to compress a gas to high pressure with only compressed air as a power source.<\/p>\n<p>Our building&#8217;s compressed air was used to drive the unit at 90psi.\u00a0 The nitrogen inlet pressure was at 70psi.\u00a0 The nitrogen outlet was a high-pressure pipe connected to a vent valve and a pressure gauge.\u00a0 To test for stall pressure, we left the outlet valve closed.\u00a0 After only a few seconds, we were able to achieve 1400psi at the gauge (expected stall pressure was 1420psi).\u00a0 This implies that the flow rate will be similar to expected when not pumping to stall. \u00a0\u00a0 However, the output pressure fluctuated significantly: the device would pump once and get to stall pressure.\u00a0 Then it would pause and the pressure would drop to about 1100psi.\u00a0 At this point it would pump again up to 1400psi.\u00a0 This was in part due to the building&#8217;s air supply having inadequate flow.\u00a0 Whenever the gas booster pumped, the building air pressure would drop down to 60 or 70 psi and struggle to rise again.<\/p>\n<p>Further testing will require a larger air compressor unit.\u00a0 Now, we need to find whatever is leaking in our gas booster (probably the one-way valves which are quite old).\u00a0 We will also prepare to test our Haskel AG-152 model which has a stall pressure of 13,500psi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4568\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4568\" style=\"width: 396px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/1121\/2016\/07\/booster_test.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4568 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/1121\/2016\/07\/booster_test-396x297.jpg\" alt=\"AGD-15\" width=\"396\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/1121\/2016\/07\/booster_test-396x297.jpg 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/1121\/2016\/07\/booster_test-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/1121\/2016\/07\/booster_test-792x594.jpg 792w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/1121\/2016\/07\/booster_test-990x743.jpg 990w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-hub\/uploads\/sites\/1121\/2016\/07\/booster_test-1188x891.jpg 1188w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Haskel AGD-15 booster ready for testing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Update: August 24, 2016<\/p>\n<p>Using soapy water, we have leak-tested the AGD-15&#8217;s components while running nitrogen gas.\u00a0 Several obvious leaks were fixed, allowing the outlet pressure to rise even further.\u00a0 We managed to get to 1500psi using 90psi air, slightly higher than the expected stall pressure (1420psi).\u00a0 This may be due to the fluctuating air pressure of the supply which may have risen past 90psi.\u00a0 The outlet pressure remained stable when the compressor stalled, which is a great improvement to the previous experiment where gas was clearly leaking.<\/p>\n<p>We also installed an air tank as a buffer between the building&#8217;s compressed air lines and the gas booster.\u00a0 This was intended to mediate the problems caused by the fluctuating air supply.\u00a0 But the pressure could only rise to about 1000psi this time.\u00a0 This is either due to higher resistance in the air-flow or because our compressor was started off cold and may require time to &#8220;warm up&#8221; before operating at full potential.\u00a0 We will probably not use this tank for the experiment.<\/p>\n<p>The AGD-15 compressor system is now fully ready to be installed for the nitrogen liquefaction testing.\u00a0 The other compressor will be tested for stall pressure, afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Of the two gas boosters (compressors) we have, we have successfully pressure tested one of them.\u00a0 The Haskel AGD-15 has been tested for stall pressure using nitrogen.\u00a0 This gas booster &#8230;
