Yturraspe, 75, of San Francisco, California, died Sunday December 29, 2013 of complications from Lung Cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan was born in Caldwell, Idaho on December 20, 1938, to Jesus (Jess) and Maxine Haylett Yturraspe. Raised in Jordan Valley Oregon, the oldest of three boys, Dan showed a passion for animals and a strong determination to become a veterinarian. He spent his summers working at local ranches and graduated from Jordan Valley High School in 1957. He went on to several institutions of higher learning before graduating from Washington State University with distinction as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1965.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Yturraspe then moved to Bakersfield California to work as a surgeon before returning to school to receive his Master&#8217;s degree and PhD from Colorado State University. There he did pioneering research in small animal spinal surgery, and was published by the University and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After his Academic Career, Dr. Yturraspe moved to the San Francisco Bay area where he would practice as a board certified surgeon for 39 years. There he opened his own animal hospital and inspired excellence in others by example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from his 5 decade career as a surgeon, Dan was a noted orchid grower, an avid chef, an artist, and a much loved member of his community. A perfectionist to the core, he demanded excellence, and delivered it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Jess and Maxine Yturraspe. He is survived by his two younger brothers, Luis and Vic Yturraspe, cherished friend, Rick Goldman, and countless loving family members and friends. His absence will be felt by all who knew him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His funeral will be held at St. Bernard&#8217;s Catholic Church in Jordan Valley, Oregon at 1:00pm on Friday, January 10, with a reception to follow.
