Edward “Ed” Church Bland Passed peacefully at home, June 15, 2009 at the age of 86. A native of his beloved San Francisco and longtime Marin resident, Edward is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan, son Richard Bland, daughter Lorelei DeBenedetti, grandson Andrew DeBenedetti and sister Ruth Oie (Robert). Ed always wanted to help animals. While attending George Washington in San Francisco, he decided to become a veterinarian. That goal was reached when he graduated from The College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University ’46. As a San Francisco Veterinarian for over 40 years, Ed treated pets, reptiles, wild animals and was known for his knowledge of avian medicine. Ed with partner Dr. Ernest Siegel (deceased) owned Avenues Pet Hospital and had a practice at Skyline Pet Hospital. He was also one of the founders of All Animals Emergency Hospital, the first emergency clinic in San Francisco, and was administrator until shortly before his passing. After he retired from active practice Ed did relief work at ABC pet and other hospitals in Marin. While living in Marin, Ed was able to resume and enjoy his hobby of racing homing pigeons. He also took pleasure in leading travel tours for the organization “Sons In Retirement.” Ed was devoted to his family and veterinary practice. He had a great respect for nature, which he has passed onto his children and others. Ed will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family gives thanks to Marin General Hospital, Greenbrae Care Center and Hospice By the Bay for their care. Celebration of his life, July 16th, 2009, at Marin Joe’s, 1585 Casa Buena, Corte Madera, 1:00 PM. Contributions in Ed’s name to animal and conservation organization, College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University, Pullman Washington 99164-6520 and Hospice By the Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
