February 15, 1922 – March 9, 2011<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Donald Ross Hales, 89, of Hillsborough, CA, passed away peacefully at home on March 9, 2011, after a short struggle with cancer. He was born on February 15, 1922, in Pasco, WA, to Alfred and Blanche Hales and had one brother, the late Howard A. Hales of Pasco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don graduated from Pasco High School in 1939. He received his Bachelors and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Washington State University. At Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, he received a Masters of Pharmacology and an MD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During medical school, he met and married Marilyn Shields. He served as a Captain in the Air Force at Hamilton Air Force Base in San Rafael, CA. They settled in California in 1956, where Don was a fellow in Hematology at Stanford University and began private practice in Burlingame, CA. For the past 47 years, they lived in Hillsborough, CA, where Don was active in the San Mateo County Medical Society and Rotary Club, having served as president of both organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don was an active member of the Millbrae Methodist Church and an avid golfer at the California Golf Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is survived by his four children, Dr. Deborah Hales (Dan Gordon) of Washington D.C.; Barbara Hales of Hillsborough, CA; Dr. Elizabeth Hales (Marc Gallanter) of New York, NY; and Dr. Thomas Hales (Denise Heyman) of Cincinnati, OH; along with three grandchildren, Mara and Joshua Gordon and Hannah Hales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A private burial was held March 11 at Skylawn Cemetery in San Mateo. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the New Vision United Methodist Church in Millbrae with a reception following. Memorial contributions can be made to New Vision United Methodist Church of Millbrae.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
