Gwilliam, ’89 DVM

October 24, 1961 – January 26, 2008

Love and passion, kindness and gentleness, and thoughtful clarity describe our beloved Tim, father and husband, friend and mentor, son and brother, and a man who cherished every moment in his quest to be the best person he could possibly be.

We want you to know about his faithful soul, about the way he gave himself to us in love, and how he poured out his energy to give us life. When life’s difficulties arose, he “circled the wagons”. Tough moments took him to his special place in Church. With a clear mind he’d gather us together at the long dinner table he built for us, bring us back to the basics, and remind us of the most important things in life: our family, our love for each other, and our faith in God. Tim didn’t need a party or special activity to raise his spirits, but he found happiness and contentment, peace and love within the heart of his family.

Our loving daddy and husband built his domicile to be a safe haven for all of us. The action, the fun, the peace, the love, the excitement, laughter and noise, and his lap held amazing girls in his life and in his heart. Everything Tim wanted in life he found with his family and many close friends.

He enjoyed the great outdoors and especially loved hunting elk for the family table as well as Spring bear and cougar but refused to have any mounts on his walls until he helped his oldest daughter bag her first elk. Tim started the tradition of giving his daughters an elk ivory ring on their 16th birthday. This tradition as well as all the traditions in the Gwilliam family will continue on, keeping his love alive in our hearts.

As a vet, Dr. Tim was kind and gentle, and most compassionate for those who could not speak for themselves. He had an ear for cardiology and could hear the slightest murmur. He had great hands for surgery, and a love-hate relationship with dairy cows. Tim enjoyed his practice day in and day out, as he loved all the species of God’s creation as well as his wonderful clients who have loved and supported us throughout this difficult time. Their loyalty to and appreciation of Tim and the Jackson Hole Vet Clinic, and the memories they relayed to us have uplifted our spirits and brought us joy.

Tim was slow to anger and always thought about the other person’s point of view. His heart in helping others rise to their gifts, and even though he loved to compete, he took great pleasure in taking the side of the underdog.

As a Catholic man, he worshipped with his family daily in the home, as well as faithfully at Our Lady of the Mountains, always fully participated in parish activities and lead as Grand Knight of the Fr. Charles A. Bartek Council Knights of Columbus. A special memory for his friends is the moment he always took with his daughters at any parting, tracing the sign of the Cross on their forehead, blessing them, “God be with you”. Last week he told his oldest daughter, Roslyn, that he had never felt stronger in his faith or closer to God.

Timothy R. Gwilliam lovingly known as Daddy, The King, Dr. Tim, Doc was born in Moscow, ID on October 24, 1961 to Tom Gwilliam and Marilyn Dehlinger. He spent his youth in Nampa and moved with the family to McCall for his teenage years. He graduated from Eastern Oregon State University and then Washington State University Veterinary School of Medicine.

Fate would have him taking his first job in Burlington, WA where he met and married the love of his life, Catherine Swartz, with whom he moved to Jackson in 1991. Birth after birth, and even though he dreamed of producing his own baseball team, he was always amazed that he should be so fortunate to end up with seven daughters, Roslyn, Mary, Bernadette, Bridget, Josephine, Isabella, and Annamarie, all of whom will miss him so.

In lieu of flowers, Tim’s family would appreciate donations to be made in his name to Wyoming Catholic College, P.O. Box 750, Lander, WY 82520.
