They lived on a family homestead and farmed. It was a tradition in the Dahlquist family for the men to go by their middle names, so he became “Dale” to everyone. After many years of being an only child, Dale gained a sister, Nancy, and then a brother, Jerry.

They moved to Vancouver, Washington in the 1940’s where, at the age of 12, he ran a team of horses for a local business. Dale graduated from Vancouver High School in 1948 and went to Washington State University and joined the Air Force ROTC. While there, he married his high school sweetheart, Joann Coma.

He graduated in 1954 with a doctorate in veterinary medicine and was stationed in Japan by the Air Force until 1956. During that time, their daughter Kim was born. Two other daughters, Lynn and Barbara, were born in the following years. After his military service, Dale and Joann moved around the Pacific northwest until finally settling in east Portland. After holding various veterinary positions, Dale opened his own veterinary practice in Gresham, Oregon, in 1964. He successfully ran 12-Mile Animal Clinic for 25 years before selling and retiring.
Dale and Joann eventually divorced. He married Charlene Tirrol in 1966 and was married to Char until her death in 2013.

Dale died peacefully at the age of 92 on January 12, 2023, at Glenwood Place in Vancouver, Washington where he had resided for several years.
