W. Marvin Mackie, DVM, passed away in the arms of his loving wife Phyllis in their home in San Pedro after a brief battle with ESBL. E. Coli. Dr. Mackie will be greatly missed by his sister, Onah Dee, nieces Sheila and Corinne, nephews Jonathan and Chris as well as his friends and the veterinary community worldwide. They will always remember him for his kindness, spirit and passion for animals.
After graduating from Washington State University with his DMV, he worked in animal clinics in Chicago and San Diego before landing in Los Angeles where he was impacted by the large number of unwanted pets and the need for affordable spay/neuter services. Partnering with his friend and colleague, Phil Weida, DVM, they opened four low-cost spay/neuter clinics in and around Los Angeles. His contribution to the decline in unwanted pets in the LA area is immeasurable. He created a surgical method for spaying and neutering animals as young as 8 weeks old and traveled around the US, Mexico and Japan teaching his method.
When not behind a surgical table, Dr. Mackie and his wife Phyllis enjoyed traveling to as many countries as possible by land, sea and air. He once said “…even if I go tomorrow, it’s been a great ride!”
Please consider a donation in Dr. Mackie’s name to your favorite animal rescue organization.
