Activating our Land-Grant Mission toward Community Support in Southwest Washington<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>This Skill Shop series advances our land-grant mission to think about the ways we can democratize practical skills toward community-building for all.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One of WSU Vancouver&#8217;s main goals is to maintain mutually beneficial community outreach, research, financial, and civic engagement partnerships. Our campus also seeks to contribute to the betterment of the community. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouver.wsu.edu\/strategic-plan\/goal-5-community\">opens new tab<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WSU Vancouver has been a leader in Southwest Washington for decades, and as a land-grant university, WSUV can be our region&#8217;s hub for practical community-based skill building and civic engagement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote wsu-spacing-before--default\">\n<p><em>Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season. It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year.<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>W.E.B. DuBois<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section  wsu-width--full wsu-border--color-crimson wsu-border--add-left\" id=\"Goals\" >\r\n    <div class=\"wsu-section__inner wsu-width--content\">    \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"goals\">Goals &amp; Objectives of the Skill Shop Series<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Stamp out apathy and powerlessness by inspiring active collaboration&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skill shops to promote active community participation&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 hour Skill Shop: 20 minute Presentation + 20 minute Activity + 20 minute Reflective Discussion&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skill shops will emphasize hands-on strategies to address current problems&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Skill Shop Series will engage music and arts, as well as practical methods to build toward a better future for all<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-before--default\">&#8230; science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all \u2014 the apathy of human beings.<\/p>\n<cite>Helen Keller, <em>My Religion<\/em> (1927)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section wsu-width--full wsu-border--add-left wsu-border--color-crimson wsu-spacing-after--default wsu-color-background--gray-5\" id=\"a-quick-history-lesson\" >\r\n    <div class=\"wsu-section__inner wsu-width--content\">    \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"history\">A Quick History Lesson<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-note wsu-note--border-goldfinch wsu-spacing-before--xsmall\">\n\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-top--xsmall wsu-spacing-bottom--xsmall wsu-font-size--xmedium\">Prior to the advent of public universities, college education was not available to most everyday people. In fact, higher education was almost exclusively available to the aristocracy: wealthy, white men whose families owned property\u2014most of us would not have been part of the aristocracy. Educational segregation created real problems for many families&#8217; ability to build wealth because access to networks, resources, and capital was reserved for a small subsection of society. The rest of us were left to make ends meet, but it didn&#8217;t have to be this way. <\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div><\/section>\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section wsu-width--full wsu-border--color-crimson wsu-border--add-left wsu-spacing-before--none wsu-spacing-after--none wsu-spacing-top--none wsu-color-background--gray-5\"  >\r\n    <div class=\"wsu-section__inner wsu-width--content\">    \n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-heading--style-marked\"><em>Morrill Act of 1862: <\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-padding-right--xxhero wsu-spacing-bottom--none\"><em>An Act donating Public Lands to the several States and Territories which may provide Colleges for the Benefit of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>With land donated by the federal government, states established over 50 universities to provide practical education to the masses, with emphasis in agricultural science, mechanics, and liberal arts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Washington State University is our state&#8217;s designated land-grant university, founded in 1890.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The First Morrill Act primarily benefitted the white public, however, and it was not until 1890 with the Second Morrill Act that the first Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were created. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Morrill Acts have been incredibly important for increasing educational access to the masses, but at the same time, they created a segregated education system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote wsu-spacing-before--default\">\n<p class=\" wsu-font-size--xxmedium wsu-align-item--center\">\u201cThe tyranny of a prince is not so dangerous to the public welfare as the&nbsp;<em>apathy<\/em>&nbsp;of a citizen in a democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Montesquieu<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section  wsu-width--full wsu-border--add-left wsu-border--color-crimson wsu-color-background--white\" id=\"reading-list\" >\r\n    <div class=\"wsu-section__inner wsu-width--content\">    \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"reading-list\">Reading List<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Almeida, Paul<em>.
