Olivia Baumann
Hi, I’m Olivia!
I’m a DVM student from Arizona and completed my undergraduate studies at University of Arizona. I started the DVM program on the Pullman campus as a member of the class of 2029. This is my first year as an ambassador.
I’d love to talk to you about hands on opportunities, being a nonresident student, and navigating gaining experience of you have a non-traditional area of interest.
Areas of interest
- Laboratory animal medicine & research
- Anatomic pathology
Club involvement
- Small Ruminant Club
- Aquatics Club
- Pathology Club
- Herd Health
Extracurricular activities
- Wildlife Triage Team
- Veterinary assistant at a small animal shelter
The DVM program is preparing us for all aspects of becoming future clinicians, beyond just understanding medicine itself. Through communication simulations, we practice navigating difficult conversations and develop strong communication skills early in our careers. We also gain hands-on experience in clinical skills and simulation labs, where we learn best practices and procedures that promote the health and safety of our future patients. These experiences have helped me grow both professionally and personally by building my confidence, communication, and clinical abilities!
My best advice for incoming students is to be patient and kind to yourself. Every day your best will look different, and that is completely okay. Some days you may not be able to study as much as others, but any effort you make is still progress toward your goals. Vet school is challenging, so it is important to recognize and appreciate the work you are putting in, even on the harder days.
I chose to attend the WSU DVM program because of the strong sense of community among the students, faculty, and staff. During orientation, everyone I met was incredibly supportive and genuinely invested in student success. Hearing the student ambassadors talk about how close their classes were and how much they enjoyed their classmates made it clear that this was a welcoming and supportive environment, and I knew it was the right fit for me!
